Focusing on Christ: He is Trustworthy

Long ago, at many times and in many ways,
God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
but in these last days he has spoken to us
by His Son,
whom He appointed the heir of all things,
through whom also He created the world.”
– Hebrews 1:1–2 ESV –

The Worldview elements of Trusted Media, The Priesthood, and The In Group are all tightly interrelated in any Worldview. This is especially true in a Biblical Christian WV in which Jesus Christ IS each of these things to and for His people. He IS our Trusted Media. He IS our High Priest. He IS our In Group.

In the Hebrews passage above, the author of Hebrews tells us that before Christ, God had communicated to the fathers – the Patriarchs in the Old Testament – by the prophets. The Prophets served as God’s “mouth” to His people. The Lord communicated through the words given to these prophets.

But now, Father God has spoken by His SonJesus. The preposition “by” could also be translated “in” His Son. Either way, the point is that Jesus has come to us as “God’s Speech” – His Word to us.

As we have already heard, in John’s Gospel Jesus is first presented as THE Word in human flesh. The fact that John equates Jesus with THE Word again highlights the idea of Father God communicating, revealing Himself in the person of Jesus. The fact that Jesus takes on flesh, becoming human also implies that the medium of a physical, human body was necessary for Father God’s clearest communication to us.

Jesus is Creator. Jesus is Savior. Jesus is King. And Jesus is also The Word – the Trusted Media – that Father God has given to us so that we can know Him truly.

When we read the Written Word – The Scriptures – we should keen in mind the fact that it was given to us to point us to Jesus:

“You study the Scriptures thoroughly
because you think in them you possess eternal life,
and it is these same Scriptures that testify about me,
but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.”

– John 5:39–40 NET –

In this passage, Jesus is rebuking the religious authorities for rejecting Him and His teaching. His basic argument is that if they had truly known the Scriptures, they would have accepted Jesus because He is the fulfillment of what they were pointing to.

After His resurrection, at the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus taught a couple of disciples on the road to Emmaus:

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He (Jesus) interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”

– Luke 24:27 –

A little later, Jesus “opened” His disciples minds to understand the Scriptures:

“Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,…”
– Luke 24:44–45 –

The Scriptures were given to us by Father God. But they were given to point us to Jesus. In a very real sense, Jesus is the “key” that unlocks the Written Word for us. And as John said,

“No one has ever seen God.
The One and Only Son
— the One who is at the Father’s side—
He has revealed Him.”
– John 1:18 HCSB –

Jesus is our “Trusted Media.” He reveals the essence of who God is in a way that nothing else can do:

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs.”
– Hebrews 1:3–4 HCSB –

Jesus connects us to Father God and to reality. He created us and sustains us and all things will ultimately find their conclusions in Him. Because He defines reality, we can and should trust what He reveals to us.
