He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of all creation.
For by Him all things were created,
in heaven and on earth,
visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—
all things were created through Him and for Him.
– Colossians 1:15–16 –
As we will be discussing and analyzing various aspects of worldviews in general, we will also be presenting a Bible Based, Christ focused worldview. We say “Bible based” because this particular view affirms the Bible, the Scriptures, to be the Word of God and therefore the Ultimate Truth Source for those who practice this view.
We say “Christ Focused” because this view keeps Christ central to all things. In the passage above, Paul tells us that He – Jesus Christ – is the image of the invisible God. The writer of Hebrews says something similar: “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature…” (Hebrews 1:3 HCSB). Jesus Himself said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9), and “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30).
All of this is best explained by John in his Gospel:
No one has ever seen God.
The One and Only Son
— the One who is at the Father’s side—
He has revealed Him.
– John 1:18 –
Colossians 1 above also tells us that Jesus is the “firstborn over all creation.” The term “firstborn” here does not mean that Jesus was the first thing that was literally “born” in Creation. Instead, the term points to Jesus as the Heir of all things. He is the firstborn Son of Father-God and therefore has the rights to all His family’s inheritance (to use human metaphors). Everything belongs to Jesus!
This basic truth is affirmed in the rest of the Colossians passage: Everything was created by Jesus, for Jesus, through Jesus. You might focus on those prepositions – by, through, for – for a few minutes and let the power of what is being said sink in. You could also meditate on this: you were created by Jesus, for Jesus, through Jesus.
Jesus is the Son of the One True God. He is The Messiah (Christ) – King of All Creation. Because Jesus IS….. We will focus on Him as the One who gives us real HOPE, the One who we trust above all others, and the One we follow in love.
